In 1859, the early settlers saw the need for a community festival to involve and draw together friends and neighbours, and to instill in them the desire to improve their way of life, and farming practises.
The Howick Agricultural Society continues to give the residents of our communities the opportunity to display their talents, and to enjoy living in a rural community.
History: Howick Township is in the heart of some excellent farm
land. In 1859, the first Howick Township Fair was held at Fordwich at the
home of the first president, W. G. Walker. The following year it was held
at Gorrie. These two villages took turns hosting the fair until 1974 when
the new Howick Community Centre became the fair’s permanent site. The Agricultural
Society donated $500 towards the new centre, and applied and donated a
$25, 000 grant to the building fund. The fair is traditionally held around
the first Saturday in October. The early fairs emphasized the agricultural
side of the community. Livestock exhibited for competition included horses,
cattle, sheep, pigs and oxen. The ladies had their classes in butter, cheese,
homemade flannel, quilts, socks, mitts and clothing. Today over 300 classes
are offered in the home craft division of the fair. Prize money in 1860
was $87.70 compared with $6419.60 in 1994. In 1875 the Howick Fair netted
only $7.25 from gate admissions. In 1994 gate receipts exceeded $4000 plus
donations of over $3000. |

 |
 |
The Agricultural Society received a $1000 grant to build Centennial
gates at the entrances to the fairgrounds in each village, Gorrie’s in
1959 and 1960 in Fordwich. |

 |
Turnberry Township Agricultural Society was formed in 1855 and held
their fairs in Wingham. In 1958 this society amalgamated with Howick Agricultural
Society, and the fair became known as the Howick-Turnberry Fair. |

Field crop competitions became a large part of the fair, starting with
oats in 1962. By 1999 there were eight crops: hay, barley, mixed grain,
soybeans, winter hard red wheat, winter soft white wheat, ensilage corn
and grain corn. |
